Sometimes, we live our lives in absolute apathy towards death. We think we’re not up for a while. Still, death comes for everyone; the young and the old, the sick and the healthy. As fate would have it, death has come, unfortunately, and unexpectedly, for women’s soccer team Sheffield United star Maddy Cusack. Maddy, 27, has been playing for the club since 2019 while also being a marketing executive for the Football Club.

The club released a statement confirming her passing, writing “Sheffield United Football Club is devastated to report the sad news of the passing of Maddy Cusack.” However, the reason for her demise remains unknown.

Cusack was More than a Player

Cusack’s career was moving along quite impressively. After having played for Birmingham and Aston Villa. Cusack moved to Sheffield. Last season, she had completed the feat of having made 100 appearances for the Blades. She was entering her 6th year as a Sheffield midfielder, having signed her latest contract in July. She was also a marketing executive after signing a contract extension with the club in January.

Cusack’s demise saw tributes pouring in for the midfielder. Maddy’s brother, Richard Cusack wrote, “My beautiful sister. May you rest in peace Maddy.” Other similarly touching tweets came from her teammates, including Beth Davies, Molly Graham, Charlotte Newsham, and others. Billy Sharp – a Sheffield United ex-captain who now plays for LA Galaxy in the MLS – also paid tribute, calling Cusack a lovely girl.” Even Sheffield United’s Chief Executive, Stephen Bettis put out a statement, “This is heartbreaking news for everyone… Her personality and professionalism made her a credit to her family – she will be sadly missed.

Tribute to Cusack

In light of her tragic passing, the FA Women’s National League has postponed two matches scheduled for this weekend: Burnley v Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest v Liverpool Feds. England and Scotland also paid tribute to Cusack with a minute of silence during their UEFA Women’s Nations League match. Sheffield United’s mean’s team manager, Paul Heckingbottom, hopes to win his upcoming game against Newcastle in his best effort to pay tribute to Maddy Cusack.

Cusack, who was the longest-serving women’s player at Sheffield, was honored by players from the Lionesses (England’s women’s national football team), as well as players from opposing teams like Jordan Nobbs and Beth England. Blades’ fans also took to social media to mourn the loss of the young star. Her death comes just weeks after Moldovan soccer player Violeta Mitul lost her life while hiking. We hope Cusack can rest easy and that her family and friends have all the support they need in these trying times.
