VIDEO: Goalkeeper Earns Instant Red Card for Going Out of His Way to Grab Player and Prevent Goal

Delivering a tackle is the least common incident where a referee delivers a red card. It is very rare to see someone grabbing the opponent on the field to stop the goal. There have been incidents where a clear obstruction gets delivered by the players and it’s mostly red.

However, in a bizarre incident, a goalkeeper slips and then tries to grab the opponent to prevent a goal. The intentions of the goalkeeper were good, but the consequences went bad.

A red card after grabbing the opponent 

The uploaded video online shows the goalkeeper who has possession of the ball and the ball gets to the opponent and he tries to score. In the attempt to save the goal, the goalkeeper gets in the way, grabs the opponent, and puts him down. He immediately gets a red card for it. 

There have been rare moments where players went out of their way and did a bizarre thing which landed red cards on them. However, it saved the goal for the moment.

Luis Suarez, during his match against Ghana, was defending at the goalpost. As soon as the shot is taken, it comes straight at him. There is only Suarez and the line. The ball crosses the line and Ghana wins. Suárez became a goalkeeper for that moment and he used his hands to throw the ball out of the penalty box. He was immediately handed a red card. However, to everyone’s surprise, the penalty which was given after the obstruction by Suárez was a miss.

This controversial situation would be wrapped by the words of Suarez in an interview where he said that the harmless obstructions like these are way better than the harmful injuries to prevent a goal.
