Kathryn Diane Meyer, known as Katie, was born in Burbank, California, on January 20, 2000. She grew up in Newbury Park, California, with her parents, Steven and Gina Meyer. She had two sisters; an older sister named Samantha and a younger sister named Siena. Katie’s journey in the world of soccer began early. Her passion for the sport was evident from a young age.

During her high school years, Katie spent her first three at Newbury Park High School before transferring to Century Academy in Thousand Oaks, California, for her senior year. She was not only interested in soccer; for two seasons at Newbury Park High School, she also served as the varsity football team’s kicker.

Katie’s commitment to soccer extended beyond her school years. She played for club teams like Real So Cal and Eagles Soccer Club, and she was also a part of the U16 girls’ national squad. Her journey was not only about personal achievement. It was also about representing her school and her country with utmost pride and determination.

On March 1, 2022, a tragic incident occurred that shook Stanford University and the broader community. Katie Meyer was discovered lifeless in her dorm room at Stanford’s Crothers Hall, a residential housing structure on the campus. Her mother revealed that Katie had received an email regarding disciplinary action. She also added that “she had been getting letters for a couple of months… This letter was kind of the final letter that there was going to be a trial or some kind of something.”

The Mysterious Circumstances Surrounding Her Passing

Stanford University, however, declined to disclose details about the disciplinary matters, citing confidentiality. The Santa Clara County coroner’s office, in a statement issued on March 3, 2022, declared the cause of death as “self-inflicted,” with “no indication of foul play“. However, the circumstances leading to this tragic outcome remain shrouded in mystery, leaving many questions unanswered.

In the wake of Katie Meyer’s passing, her family has decided to legal action. On November 23, 2022, the Meyer family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Stanford in Santa Clara County Superior Court. The lawsuit alleged that Katie was “facing disciplinary action for allegedly spilling coffee on a Stanford football player who was accused of sexually assaulting a female soccer player.” According to her father, Katie was supporting a teammate who was underage at the time.

They filed the complaint with the Stanford Office of Community Standards, and potential sanctions included withholding her diploma. Katie also had dreams of attending Stanford Law School after completing her undergraduate education, making her tragic loss all the more gut-wrenching.
