A heated clash in the heart of Turkish soccer has taken a major and unprecedented turn. Plunging the Super League, a gripping tale of chaos and controversy unfolded between Ankaragucu and Rizespor. Referee suffers brutal injuries as team President goes berserk

When the match between Rizespor and Ancaragucu kicked off, people had little idea of the mayhem that was to follow. O. Morutan drew first blood as Ancaragucu nudged ahead in the 14th minute. Umut Meller, who was in charge of refereeing, sent A. Sowe off the pitch after showing a second yellow card in the second half. However, tempers flared and Rizespor’s E. Topcu accumulated a red in the 95th minute, leaving both teams with ten men. 

Drama unfolded as Rizespor responded with a late stoppage time equalizer via A. Gaich in the 97th minute. An enraged Ancaragucu President, Faruk Koca stormed inside the ground soon after the match ended. In a fit of rage, he charged directly towards the referee and delivered a brutal punch to his face. The impact made Meller tumble onto the pitch when another offender hit him on his head. 

Such a shocking scene was soon intervened by staff and players from the two teams. They quickly covered for the referee and prevented further violence. Security personnel escorted Koca out of the park. The incident was a shameful one and repercussions did follow.

Ali Yerlikaya, the Interior Minister of Turkey commented on the matter and updated on Koca’s condition. Reportedly, Koca also faced agitation and was injured in the process. Yerlikaya stated, Faruk Koca is being treated in the hospital under the supervision of our police forces. After the treatment, detention procedures will be carried out.”

After the shocking fiasco, all the matches were canceled till further notice. Koca will be taken in custody along with two other suspects on account of “injuring a public official.” Koca will further face a life ban while Ankaragucu will be paying off $81000 as fines.

Soccer has always been celebrated for promoting a unifying power, but with such an unprecedented turn, Turkish football found itself grappling with a darker side. The incident is continuously clashing against the principles of brotherhood and integrity.
