In the realm of sports, communication and camaraderie often play a crucial role. Actor Jonny Cotsen shared his experience of his encounter with the Wales Deaf Football team ahead of the European Championships that is to be held in Turkey. 

Through this meet and greet session, came heartfelt stories and exposed the unwavering dedication of the team and its players in their attempt to be a part of the world of soccer. The interview unveils a heartwarming narrative of empowerment and inclusivity within soccer. 

Triumph of inclusivity and aspiration in soccer

The soccer team, led by the Wales Deaf Football Association and chaired by Adey Blake, comprises deaf players and staff except the chairman and the secretary, Talina. Within the team, a safe environment has been fostered where everyone communicates fluently through British Sign Language (BSL). 

The soccer players have ensured to maintain a streak and have remained unbeaten throughout the year showcasing their athletic prowess. Strongly impressed by their dedication, despite their lack of exposure to local soccer games, the team is passionate about fulfilling the aspirations of the soccer players. The manager of the Wales Deaf Football team, Stuart Denmead came with an assurance, “I want their dreams to come true”. 

Even though there have been a lot of impediments, the integration of the team adhered to the conventional 11-a-side format. Hence, inclusivity has been taken care of while absorbing the soccer players to the stringent rules of the game that exhibited their resilience to pursue their aim. 

Unveiling new era for aspiring athletes

With their stellar performance, the soccer team had left a deep impression. Besides, while interacting with the staff and players, Cotsen was thoroughly impressed by the Wales Deaf Football team’s role of serving as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes living with disabilities. On this note, the actor shared his experience, how he never had a role model to look up to that now the young athletes have.

Since childhood, even though Cotsen loved playing soccer, he failed to engage himself with others in the sport because of his hearing impairments. The actor shared how he always felt left out, “I’m excited for these kids to have a role model because i never had a role model, never. So I’ve got goosebumps, a bit emotional. My brother was good footballer, my Dad was an amazing footballer, all my friends were good footballers, but they weren’t anyone I looked up to because I couldn’t be like them. I couldn’t fit in a team, I couldn’t hear them”.  His emotional response to meeting the team resonates deeply with the need for inclusivity in sports, ensuring they are not robbed of any opportunities in the realm of sports because of their impairments.

It has been an emotionally fulfilling experience for Cotsen as he could relate with the Wales Deaf Football team. He now feels satisfied that the soccer players receive great mentorship that does not make them feel isolated and propels them toward success on the field by not letting their hearing inabilities come in their way.
