When the elevating costs behind multiple sliding events for the 2026 Olympic competitions started becoming unbearable, ideas about its potential shift were placed on the table. However, then came another drive for change, this time urging to bring the tournament back to Italian soil.

With initial discussions suggesting a potential move of the Olympic sliding events outside Italy, it was ignited in consideration of the spiraling expenses. But a beam of fresh hope brightened the tournament when Matteo Salvini, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister voiced his candid opinions.

During a public exchange on December 15, Salvini shared his personal choice for the bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge competitions. As a fervent advocate for hosting the Olympic games in his homeland, the transport minister was spotted insisting on Cortina d’Ampezzo as the rightful sliding venue.
Rekindling the nation’s aspirations to witness the Winter Olympic competitions, Salvini’s claims were contradictory to the organizing chief’s prior announcement. Evidently, the management’s decision was conveyed by Giovanni Malago in October this year, recorded during a gathering in Mumbai.
A glorious culmination of homecoming efforts
At the International Olympic Committee Session, Malago had spoken on behalf of the Italian government, mentioning his urgent orders to shift the sliding games outside the country. But now, as Salvini’s resolution made news, he was seen effectively steering the possibilities back to an Italian setting, building anticipation among fans.

As per reports, the sliding tracks in Cesena were previously used at the 2006 Turin Olympic events, which was now tipped by officials as a potential replacement. With strategies for efficiency and timely execution, the ministry also vowed that the proposed track would not incur additional expenses for the nation, landing a fruitful trail of hope.
While the deadline for reconstructing the Olympic slide track was marked at the end of January 2024, verifications and subsequent moves with the IOC shall be conducted. Additionally, the managing committee also emphasized contacting the German, Swiss, Austrian, and American Olympic boards for further clarity in venue selection.
