While Cairn, being a sportsman, has led an active life, he suffered from a sudden cardiac arrest that almost brought him in close proximity to death. He had to undergo aortic dissection and was put under life support at a Sydney hospital. However, it seemed to be the beginning of his arduous journey, followed by the heart attack when he suffered a devastating stroke.

The stroke left him crippled from the waist down, and it was at that time Crain revealed his indomitable spirit while bearing the physical exhaustion of undergoing four open-heart surgeries. As reported by the Stuff, the all-rounder was robbed of the ability to walk and needed crutches and a wheelchair to tread.

In the meantime, bowel cancer took control of his body, trying to intimidate him morally. However, battling all odds and barriers, Crain soared high up in the sky before heading back to the ground in a tandem skydive endeavor that he referred to as “a life lesson I shall carry with me forever.”

A resilient journey to recovery

As a means of connecting with his fans, Crain took the help of social media, updating every bit of his progress with his huge fan base. While the cricketer shared his emotional and physical turmoil, well-wishers poured in their support and blessings that continued to remind Crain that he was not alone in this recovery journey.

Amidst slow progress, it was in October 2021 that Crain had a “flickering” sensation in his right ankle that bestowed him with a ray of hope. He even sought permission and spent Christmas with his family that year, which served as evidence of his slow but gradual progress towards recovery.

In his rehabilitation journey, the moment when Crain succeeded in standing on a hydrotherapy pool all by himself marked a notable milestone serving as an inspiration for everyone facing similar objections. He took a leap in his recovery journey by undertaking a thrilling tandem skydive adventure.
