Robert Hurd, a gym owner from Middletown, made a remarkable mark with his cycling adventures. At 62 years of age, he embodied the spirit of ‘go big or go home.’ With his boundless energy and relentless determination to conquer the most challenging of rides, Robert continued embracing thrill-seeking trips. He could not live without being out on the road, as in his latest endeavor, the seasoned rider exemplified an unwavering commitment.

During a cross-country charity ride to benefit injured cyclists that began in mid-September, Hurd left Connecticut behind. Heading for the sun-soaked streets of San Francisco, his goal was to raise $10,000 for ‘Please be Kind to Cyclists’. The organization is renowned for its noble acts, staying devoted to fostering understanding and respect between motorists and cyclists. However, tragedy struck on September 21 in Texas, just as Hurd pursued his admirable funding venture.

Robert’s cycling tour was aptly named ‘Saving Lives One Pedal Stroke at a Time,’ as it aimed at supporting injured cyclists. He wished to assist the suffering riders who faced unimaginable car crashes, working with the Cyclist Tragedy Assistance Program. But his last trip remained unfinished, as Hurd met with an untimely accident. While cycling near the city of Lorenzo, about 20 miles from Lubbock, he was struck by a pickup truck.

As the experienced cyclist crossed the main traffic road, two cars collided with him while he was riding in the bike lane. His daughter, Taylor Flores, still grappling with losing her father, explained that Hurd was following the street rules. She backed her claim with statements from authorities that assured Hurd of staying in the proper lane, stating, “It was a freak accident.” Sadly, Hurd’s commitment to promoting motorist-cyclist understanding, as depicted in his YouTube videos, stays incomplete with this crash.

A notable legacy in cycling adventures

Robert’s sudden demise from a casual riding trip was a stern reminder of the dangers on the road. Subsequently, investigators found a banana at the scene, suggesting that Hurd might have been peeling one when the collision occurred, leaving him no time to save himself. The inspiring cyclist’s life was marked by resilience, as he had previously survived severe cycling accidents in 2014 and 2015. In the second incident, he was hit by a car while pedaling through an intersection, even when the signal indicated a green light.

The crash resulted in extensive injuries, including a broken jaw and the need for a breathing tracheotomy. Reportedly, Hurd was enduring daily headaches and persistent pain, which continued till his passing day. Despite his loss, the cycling lover’s commitment to his goals profoundly impacted those who knew him. He lived by example, inspiring others to pursue their dreams and remain dedicated. Hurd’s daughter, Taylor Flores, is now managing her father’s workplace and trying to maintain his legacy.
