63-Year-Old Injured Hiker Left Alone in Grand Canyon Got Miraculously Rescued

The evening of September 15th brought out tension at the Mohave County Sheriff’s office after a nerve-wracking call for help came in. A 63-year-old hiker reportedly injured himself and was left alone in the rugged terrain of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim. His desperate plea for assistance reached the Sheriff’s office around 6 p.m. that Friday. 

After informing authorities through an Apple device connected via satellite, the four other backpackers left the man by himself. They abandoned him and carried on with their venture while the unfortunate man waited for help alone. Suffering a severe shoulder injury, the poor guy found himself in a dire situation. Earlier in the day, at approximately 2 p.m., the aged hiker faced an accidental fall while traversing the challenging landscape of Kanab Creek. With the injured hiker’s location tracked via the Apple device, Search and Rescue instantly sprang into action. They began by summoning the DPS Western Air Rescue helicopter from Kingman, given the urgency of the matter. As night fell, the assistance mission grew increasingly challenging, shrouding the canyon walls in darkness.

The helicopter, piloted by a rescue specialist and medic, made a courageous landing about a quarter mile from the injured hiker’s precarious position. After navigating through the rugged terrain, the crew ultimately located the wounded man. They assisted him with delicate care, monitoring his evacuation and stabilizing him under immediate action.

Against all odds, the support team safely transported the afflicted hiker back to the helicopter. Soon, the chopper swiftly rushed him to the nearest Flagstaff hospital for further medical inspection.
