Football has always been dangerous. But, at least until now, the sport was considered dangerous only for the players participating in the match. Similar to MMA, the sport only posed a risk to those playing the game. However, that perception of American football has taken a massive hit after a recent incident on Friday, involving a fatal tragedy.
The incident sent shock waves down the community present and even those residing in the area. Linda Gregory, 69, was photographing a junior varsity game between Wichita Northwest High School and Bishop Carroll High when the tragedy occurred. While covering the event, Gregory painfully hit her head on concrete and passed away Friday. Her husband confirmed her death on Facebook.

Gregory had long been an ardent supporter of Wichita Northwest High School, while also being a long-time fan. While at the game, covering her favorite team, players from the pitch “ran into” her when they fell out of bounds. She immediately fell over, hit her head on concrete, and sustained a brutal concussion. According to her husband, “As the evening went on her conditions have gotten worse.”

Gregory’s husband claimed that she passed away surrounded by her family and loved ones. Meanwhile, Gregory’s husband, Mel, attended a game with his family on Friday, where his wife was honored for her dedication to the school and “her boys.” Mel also took to Facebook, writing “As far as Linda’s passing. It was peaceful and as she wished took little time.” He also shared his appreciation for the support his family received during this trying period.
Mel believes his wife would have been “surprised and overwhelmed” by the reaction to her death. He added, “We are trying to set up a foundation to fund a scholarship for prospective photographers and will keep you posted.” He also shared that Linda’s body had been to Kansas City to prepare for donation.
School’s Reaction to Tragedy
Meanwhile, the school also mourned the death of Lind Gregory, marking her demise with a moment of silence. Players also had the letters ‘LG’ on their helmets in her honor. “Linda’s sideline presence and constant support of our students will be sorely missed at Northwest High School,” the school said. Many paid tribute to Linsa on Facebook as well.
Martin, the coach, wrote to Mel Gregory on Facebook: “I wanted to let our boys that didn’t know Linda that long how much Linda and you meant to our program and my family! She will live forever in this program! We will honor her everytime we step foot on that field!”
