The indigenous people of the Himalayas, also known as Sherpas, are some of the toughest people on our planet. An endurant they are, a much more understated trait they possess, is the ability to stay calm and collected. And that is what helped this sherpa get out of a life-threatening event of his life when he fell into a 60m deep crevasse between Everest Camp 1 and Camp 2.

A rescue operation was conducted 20,000 feet up the slopes of Everest. A high-altitude mountain guide, Gesman Tamang shared a video on June 8th that depicted the sherpa buried in the snow down to the waist. The rescue team pulled him up via ropes attached to his shoulders. Throughout the entire endeavor, humor and laughter are what kept the situation manageable. The video also shows Tamang and the Sherpa laughing and making merry while shoveling snow to free a trapped comrade. While this seems like the worst place for anyone to be trapped, the upbeat nature of the rescuers takes away from the seriousness of the situation. In fact, it almost gave the video a ‘prank’ feel.

While these crevasses can be over 200 feet deep, they did not phase the Sherpas. It seemed to be just another day in their lives. However, under the surface, Tamang knew what he was dealing with. “It’s a miracle that this man survived falling into a crevasse like this,” Tamang wrote on Instagram. “Luckily, our timely response and teamwork made it possible to get him out safely.

Defying danger and demonstrating compassion

Thanks to the team, the rescue was successful. The sherpa was pulled out safely, aided by an oxygen mask, and taken to safety. “My gratitude goes out to all those involved in this rescue, and also to the Sherpa himself. His strength and resilience played a significant role in his survival,” Tamang added, indicating just how dangerous this rescue could have been.

Despite all the danger, Tamang and his friends could see the funny side of things. This moment truly brought the idea of laughing in the face of potential death to life. In 2023 itself, we’ve seen some incredibly selfless acts in the mountains. In a different event, a Sherpa guide convinced his client to abandon his assent to the Everest summit to rescue a Malaysian climber trapped in the Death Zone.
