Running a marathon is a monumental feat, but rewriting history is a whole different league of achievement. Despite appearances, marathon running demands an extraordinary level of preparation and endurance. It’s a battle against time, a test of human resilience. One athlete who emerged to do all of this in perfection was Tamirat Tola, seizing the spotlight and breaking a 12-year-old record at the NYC Marathon!

NYC Marathon’s 52nd edition happened on the 5th of November. It is a 26.2-mile race, and it took place on the streets of the Big Apple. The NYC marathon is a Platinum label marathon and was the last of the six World Marathon Majors events scheduled for the year. While the race does make headlines every year as top athletes from all over the world arrive to compete, this year’s generated great buzz due to the history it made.

12 years later, NYC Marathon has a new record-holder

Ethiopian athlete Tamirat Tola broke a 12-year-long record at the NYC marathon with his spectacular performance. He bagged first place in a Majors Marathon for the first time after finishing fourth in two previous editions of this marathon. His dream day, although, did not stop over there as in the course of his first victory, he also broke the 12-year-long men’s course record.

The previous best, 2:05:06, set by Geoffrey Mutai in 2011, was another achievement at the time, breaking a decade-long record. Tamirat bettered the record by a massive margin and finished the marathon with a final time 2:04:58.

It was the first time that any athlete was able to finish a marathon under 2 hours and 5 minutes. The new age of marathon running has witnessed several record-shattering performances in the past few months, ushering in a new age of running.

Tamirat owns the race in a dominant style.

To bag your first gold medal in a Majors Marathon is a special and indescribable feeling, but to break a course record and breach unchartered territory is stuff of dreams. Tamirat Tola brought his A game to the marathon this time and had a point to prove after finishing fourth in the last two editions.

He had an absolutely dominant race and displayed his astute skills. In the final 10 kms of the marathon, he pulled off a thrilling dash and took matters into his own hands. The next racer, Albert Korir, was nowhere near him in the race to the finish. He completed his marathon a whole two minutes after the Ethiopian maestro did.

The 2022 World Champion once again etched his name in the history books by becoming the first to breach the 2-hour 4-minute mark. Judging by how the races have shaped up in the past few months, someone may break this record sooner than later. The world of marathon racing just got a lot more interesting.
