Bob Hesford’s remarkable journey in rugby began at Arnold School, where he honed his talents and later showcased them for Fleetwood RUFC. After university, he made significant strides by playing for Wasps before embarking on an adventure in Zambia for three years. However, it was his move to Bristol that proved to be the defining chapter of his career.

Joining Bristol in 1978, Hesford demonstrated immense leadership qualities and dedication, eventually captaining England during their tour of New Zealand. Over the span of his illustrious career, he earned 10 caps for England between 1981 and 1985, representing his country with pride and passion. His impressive skills on the field and unwavering commitment to the sport earned him five appearances for the Barbarians as well.
Beyond his playing days, Hesford continued to contribute to rugby’s growth. He stepped into a coaching role at Bristol in the late 1980s, passing on his invaluable knowledge and experiences to the next generation of players. Bristol Bears released the following statement “Bob Hesford will be remembered as one of Bristol’s all-time great forwards. He was a great raconteur with a wonderful sense of humour, and he will be much missed in the local rugby community.”

He continued the family tradition, and his brother Iain carved out a professional football career as a goalkeeper for clubs like Blackpool, Sunderland, and Hull City.
