Skydiving is one of the most daring adrenaline-generating activities known to man. While some bask in the glory of racing toward the ground at top speed before deploying a parachute, others are quite justifiably terrified by the idea. However, sometimes not liking something is still a good enough reason to engage in it. So is also the case with Ms. Woman of the Year Jerrie-Lee Ngareta Hill, who will be dropping out of the sky for a charitable cause.

Ngareta is also planning on going forward with the task with her best friend Maria Moore. The two women met at BOPAS acting classes together about four years ago and have been inseparable ever since.

Jerrie-Lee stumbled upon the idea after having met Dan Allen-Gordon at an acting class. Allen-Gordon, who assists the Graeme Dingle Foundation, had first asked Ngareta if she wanted to be a mentor at the foundation and Ngareta agreed immediately. However, soon enough after that agreement, he called her and said “I’m going to ask you to jump out of a plane’.” After spending a few days contemplating the decision, Ngareta went ahead with it.

“Ultimately I thought, ‘why not?’ it’s a once in a lifetime experience, and if it is something I do want to do, why not do it for a good cause?”, she said. Meanwhile, Ngareta’s friend Maria Moore, 66, is not great with heights and is using the opportunity to get over her apprehension. She believes the foundation is a great medium to teach kids how to behave.

On the other hand, Ngareta plans on powering through the activity by portraying a fictional character to ease her nerves. “We’re pretending to be experts at skydiving. Like we do this every day. I am actually extremely frightened of heights,” says Jerrie Lee.

How to Impact Lives

Moore also elaborated on the first time she felt a teacher make a difference in her life. She explained how despite not being among the popular kids, “I was encouraged by a teacher who told me I was great at maths. That day, I got a nine out of ten score on a test.” The 66-year-old claims that the experience stuck with her. She hopes to make a similar impact on a child’s life through the foundation.

Moore said she initially felt silly agreeing to drop out of the sky. However, Ngareta eventually convinced her that this was a brave thing for her to do. Jerrie-Lee and Maria will drop for youth on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at 12 p.m. To learn more about their fundraiser for the Graeme Dingle Foundation, visit their GiveALittle page.
