As Joel attempted the challenging climb, tragedy struck when he fell approximately 300 to 500 feet (90-150 meters), resulting in severe injuries. Despite his girlfriend’s swift call for help, the vast rocky terrain made it impossible to determine his exact location.
The Oregon National Guard Blackhawk helicopter and courageous mountain rescue teams immediately launched a search and rescue operation. Armed with crucial information from drone footage, they embarked on the mission to locate Joel. Their dedication and determination were unparalleled.
However, after days of intense search efforts, Joel Tranby’s lifeless body was discovered near the summit of the North Sisters. Lane County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Tom Speldrich said, “We could spot him from our eyes from the helicopter. But the steep slope made it impossible for our climbers to reach in time, When we reached there, his body had already stopped responding.”
His parents April and David said, “Joel went out with his girlfriend to do something he really enjoyed. It was his happy place.”
