On most game days, footballers are superhumans. They endure tough tackles and hard punishment on the field. Still, somehow make it out okay to show up for practice the next day. However, no one can stay tough forever and most athletes have their breaking points, sustaining terrible, and sometimes life-altering, injuries along their career.

One such injury was sustained by a Greater Latrobe School football player. He had to be airlifted to UPMC Children’s Hospital. The anonymous player was injured in a game against Thomas Jefferson. Currently, his condition is still unknown.

This injury update comes as a shock to the player’s family, teammates, and the general community. Even officials from the opposing team, Thomas Jefferson, offered their thoughts and prayers to the player and his family. The incident comes amidst a long list of recent terrible injuries across the sport.

On Friday, 4 high school footballers – Laurel Highlands star Antwan Black Jr., Shenango lineman Michael Egetoe, and an unidentified Sto-Rox player – were hospitalized for injuries they suffered while playing. Black, who has received multiple college offers, was “briefly motionless” after falling awkwardly after taking a catch mid-game. Meanwhile, Jersey Shore defensive lineman Max Engle was taken away in an ambulance after collapsing midgame against Selinsgrove.

Besides this, Karns City quarterback Mason Martin is fighting for his life after collapsing on the field during his team’s opening game. The future star passed out during the third quarter against Redbank Valley. The future athlete suffers from brain bleed and a collapsed lung from the injuries he sustained during his match, according to his family.

Recovery in Progress

Martin’s family is asking for continued prayers as doctors try to reduce the swelling in his brain. “I cannot commend the Nurses, Doctors, and Support Personnel enough. Every single one of them have gone above and beyond to love and care for Mason.” Martin’s mother, Stacy King Martin, wrote on Facebook.

As far as injuries go, it remains to be seen if the authorities in football take action to stop young men in their prime from sustaining such severe damage. Over the past two decades, the NFL has grown increasingly considerate towards injured players. Measures have included being more proactive in the event of head injuries. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of the injured. Here’s hoping they eventually overcome their injuries and go on to have massive careers ahead.
