Eras come and eras go. Whether it was John Cena’s incredible run in the WWE or the almost 15 years of Messi-Ronaldo dominance in soccer, all times eventually come to an end. But the silver lining is that there is always a new period on the horizon. The era we are addressing today certainly stands as one we can be optimistic about for both sports and society at large. Join us as we delve into the life and career of Justine Lindsay – the first trans cheerleader in the NFL.
While we’ve seen the stereotypical cheerleaders with skinny waists in the NFL across the years, Lindsay says this archetype does not define her role or responsibilities.
Cheerleader Despite Stereotypes

Justine Lindsay’s presence has already begun to upend the deep-rooted prejudices and biases that the general public showed toward cheerleaders. For many, she signified the dawn of a new day, where the NFL was stepping towards a more inclusive environment. While her encounters with online trolls and conservative fans have tested her, Lindsay believes “Everything that I’m going through now, it’s bigger than me.”

Lindsay said it was her friend who encouraged her to try out for the TopCats cheer squad. However, despite her nerves, Lindsay was ready to live her truth. “I want to change the narrative for my trans sisters and brothers, just to [let them] know that if you have a goal, go for it,” she says. She added that she wants her community to prosper despite the odds. “Be an NFL cheerleader, or a doctor or a nurse or whatever you set your mind to.”
Just as usual. Lindsay was there to shake up the status quo. “She had a shaved head and so much confidence,” said TopCats coach Chandalae Lanouette. She added that, besides being “good at what she does” Lindsay was also showing “so much joy in performing.” While she felt rather uncertain about her impact at first, Lindsay now owns her identity and wears it loud and proud.

On Fighting Transphobia
While she did well to remain unphased by hateful comments, Lindsay’s first months with the squad were still difficult. Beyond just inappropriate comments and general transphobia, rumors started to make the rounds. Some began claiming she had threatened to sue the TopCats if they cut her from tryouts. However, those claims were immediately silenced. Still, Lindsay has to maintain her resolve to stay strong amid the constant hate, mockery, and transphobia. Fortunately, she has a decent army of supporters backing her achievements to rely on.
While this year has seen a record for crimes against the LGBTQ+ community, even the state governments have clamped down on inclusivity. 22 US states have already banned transgender kids from participating in sports in accordance with their gender identity. While this move, including in Lindsay’s state North Carolina, has hurt the community, Lindsay remains focused.
