In the glamorous world of NFL cheerleading, usually it’s about dazzling smiles and spirited routines. However, a darker reality often lurks beneath the glittering pompoms. Justine Lindsay, the NFL’s first openly transgender cheerleader, recently opened up about the real-life bullies that she faces.
Her journey is definitely beyond inspirational. However, it has not been without its share of challenges. Beyond the cheers and fame, Lindsay faces real-life bullies who hurl insults from the stands. Obviously, this creates a nasty undercurrent to her otherwise spectacular rise to the top!
The Harsh Reality of In-Stadium Harassment
In the life of any public figure, there are bound to be trolls and bullies. Online media trolls can be blocked with the click of a button. However, the same cannot be said for real-life bullies whose voices echo loudly in the stands.

Justine Lindsay, in her role as an NFL cheerleader, reflects on this very dissonance between the virtual world and the IRL encounters. Chants, insults, and derogatory remarks pierce through the cheers of the crowd, reminding her that acceptance, unfortunately, is not universal.
TopCats coach Chandalae Lanouette acknowledges the harsh reality. “I wholeheartedly wish I could tell you that, on game day, all of our fans celebrate Justine. But that’s just not 100 percent the case.”
It might not necessarily be just the harsh words from the fans that cause torment to Justine. Sometimes, people exhibit non-inclusive behavior even without attempting to bully her. The weight of this truth is evident when fans request selfies with the TopCats, but some ask Justine to step out of the frame.
Dancing Through the Storm
However, online bullies make matters even more stressful for Justine. Lindsay often receives mean-spirited direct messages post a game, reducing her to tears. “It really made me want to clap back, but I couldn’t do that,” Lindsay says. She understands the impact her words may have on those who look up to her. In these moments of adversity, Lindsay turns to dance for solace. Dance – a temporary escape from the stress and hostility she faces.
Amid the tumultuous sea of cheers and jeers, dance remains Justine Lindsay’s sanctuary. As she navigates the challenging terrain of in-stadium harassment, she relies on the art of dance to find comfort and strength. “It takes my mind away from all the stress,” Lindsay confides. “I escape, even just for a moment.”
The power of dance lies not just in its physical expression but also in its capacity to provide emotional respite. In Lindsay’s graceful movements, she finds refuge from the taunts and negativity that occasionally pervades her NFL cheerleading experience.
