Cheerleaders are much more than just an element of entertainment during a match. To convey this sentiment, the renowned NFL side, Philadelphia Eagles celebrated the 75th anniversary of their cheerleading team last Sunday. The team of cheerleaders was initially founded in the year 1948. This was one of the most significant years in the history of the team. 1948 was the year when the Eagles put their hand on the first World Championship. Fittingly enough, this year too, the team is looking all set to lift the trophy one more time. However, as that is a question for the future to answer, the extravaganza that followed on Sunday at the Lincoln Financial Field was surely a spectacle to watch.
Thousands of fans flocked to the stadium as they witnessed a homecoming of epic proportions. To celebrate the auspicious occasion, the Eagles invited all of their members of the cheer team including the ones who have retired. The cheerleading team of the Eagles remains busy all year round. While the players get to rest during the offseason, the cheerleaders do not rest. They go around the country making connections with the fans. Fans can come up to them and talk about the various proceedings of the team, in turn, making a strong connection with the team. One such fan was Maggie Trush Hammond. She was fortunate enough to strike up a conversation with the Eagles’ cheerleaders during an event in 1980.
Hammond was left awestruck by the aura and charisma of the team. This face-off instilled in her a spark that later compelled her to become one of them herself. Hammond went on to become one of the greatest members of the Eagles’ cheer team and continued mesmerizing the fans from 1993 till 1998. Heaping loads of praises on the efforts and talents of the team, the Eagles’ Director of Entertainment Teams also chimed in.
