The world of football has drowned in sorrow! The former NFL wide receiver Mike Williams, also called the ‘Buffalo Legend’ passed away at the age of 36. He was hospitalized for over a month and was on life-support following complications stemming from a workplace accident in August.

Despite his tragic passing, William’s indomitable spirit and accomplishments continue to inspire. Known for his remarkable talents in both football and basketball, William’s legacy spans from his stellar high school performance to a successful stint in the NFL.

Born in Buffalo, Williams, a Riverside High School alumnus, achieved legendary status for his exceptional skills on the field and court. His prowess earned him a scholarship to Syracuse University, where he continued to shine. His contribution to the local sports scene reached its pinnacle when he played for his hometown team, the Buffalo Bills, during the culmination of his 5-year NFL career.

In his high school senior year alone, Williams racked up an impressive 970 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. Off the gridiron, William exhibited a similar level of brilliance on the basketball court. He notched up 1,468 points for Riverside, leading the team to consecutive undefeated seasons in Yale Cup play. His junior year marked a history milestone as Riverside clinched both the Harvard Cup and the Yale Cup titles in the same season for the first time in 21 years!

Williams joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2010 NFL Draft. He also became the first rookie to secure touchdowns in consecutive games since Carnell Williams in 2005. The year 2013 marked a pivotal moment for Williams as he signed a 6-year contract with the Buccaneers. However, later that year he suffered a hamstring injury because of which he was placed on an injured reserve. In 2014, Williams joined the Buffalo Bills, his home team, where he played 1 season. “Mike is the greatest athlete in Buffalo history” were the words of Domonic Cook, a friend and a former teammate. In total, Williams had 223 receptions for 3,089 yards and 26 touchdowns in 63 NFL games throughout his career.

Rosenthal recounted that upon his first visit to the hospital, Williams was turned away under the presumptions of concussion. Upon experiencing loss of sensation in his legs, he was then re-admitted. In a further complicating twist, Williams developed a staph infection. He had to finally undergo a spinal cord surgery. He is remembered not only as a sports icon but also as a symbol of Buffalo’s rich athletic heritage. Mike Williams left behind a legacy that transcends sports. His incredible talent, dedication, and perseverance will inspire a generation of athletes in Buffalo and beyond.
