While the Black Canyon is one of the most intriguing sites to see in the US, climbing it is no easy feat. The gigantic depression is over 2,722 feet deep, making it a formidable obstacle to overcome for most climbers. So, it’s really no surprise that the intimidating site has often left the odd climber in a real bind. However, once stuck, it is incredibly tedious to get yourself out of safely. That is the exact situation one climber found themselves in after an unfortunate misstep.

The climber in question slipped and fell off one of the country’s steepest rock walls in a huge canyon in Colorado and was knocked unconscious. Eventually, they needed help from rescuers, who put their lives on the line to retrieve the climber in relatively good condition.

On September 11, rescue teams were called upon at 10:30 a.m. The teams hiked to the North Rim of Black Canyon to begin their rescue. From there, they were forced to drop 1,800 feet in before they scaled a further 300 meters. They were then lowered to the bottom to ensure they rescued the climber stuck in distress.

The route up the Black Canyon is a rather difficult one to scale. Authorities said the route – Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park – was serious and requires training. It is not for beginners, they added.

Cautions for Climbers

“Even the seasoned climber can face risk of injury or death on the steep walls,” officials said. They also warned of the dangers that even experienced climbers might face on this route. “Climbers, and hikers, must prepare to face many hazards and self-rescue if required,” they claimed. They also advised great caution and care while climbing the Canyon, claiming that “there is little to no cell service or communication at the park.”

Fortunately for the climber – as well as for other nature trail and climbing enthusiasts – the rescue team reacted very decisively. They ensured that help was available at the right time even if the person in distress was unconscious. They truly are the heroes of this story for putting their own lives and security at risk to help a fellow climber in a time of need.
