In a recent video which is making its round on Twitter, an arrest gone wrong becomes a textbook example of how to diffuse a situation. The video shows an officer of the police force being attacked by a perpetrator. What happens next, is generating a lot of attention on the Internet.
Arrest Gone Wrong
In what looks like an arrest gone wrong, a perpetrator wearing all greens comes out swinging at the officer. The officer, understanding the situation, backs off, removes his vest, and places it carefully on top of his squad car. The suspect takes this time to take off what appears to be his backpack as well. The officer realizes that he might be forced to bust out his MMA skills.

The suspect charges again at the officer, while the officer assumes defensive position. Following the rules of boxing 101, the officer has his chin up and face protected, while the perp takes a couple more swings at him. Using the momentum of the perp against him, the officer managed to land a couple of jabs, before the perp caught the officer by the back of his neck.

The officer uses this momentum to pin the perp against his car to land a couple more punches, before the perp releases the hold and backs off. He tries to take a couple more swings at the cop, and realizing that he doesn’t have the power or the technique to beat the officer, he backs down.

One important thing to note is that, usually, there have been plenty of cases where excessive force has been utilized by the police force. This case sets a perfect example of how a police officer can remain defensive, not use excessive force, while still diffusing the situation.
No Tazers, no batons and especially, no guns were involved.
Twitter in Splits
Twitter was decidedly split on whether to applaud what’s happened, or if the police officer was a little too lenient in the way he handled the situation. Reacting to this video, shot by a bystander from inside his car, the Twitter handle of the Obscura true crime podcast tweeted out “Interesting that the cop kept it fair”.

Some people were particularly mad at how long this situation took to diffuse. Twitter user Vernin Quickly wrote “Cops should be way more physically trained than that. Aint no way a random guy that weighs about 140 should hold his own against a COP”
