Age is truly just a number and we see living examples of that spirit every single day. Whether it comes to working or working out, it’s undeniable that the elderly approach the job with the right attitude. Still, while most elderly people are likely to impress those around them by simply going about their lives without needing assistance, today we’re looking at a whole different breed of people. Or at least so we are with 94-year-old Bill Mitchell, who went skydiving for the very first time.
That’s right – a 94-year-old man took to the skies and dropped 13,000 feet for an “indescribable” experience. It’s something he’s wanted to do for ages now and so he just put his best foot forward… out of an airborne plane.
Skydiving Cravings for Years

Mitchell claims he has had a hankering for skydiving for a long time but his wife was vehemently opposed to the idea. The couple had been married for over 72 years before she passed away earlier this year in March. She was 92 years old herself and her absence left Mitchell in an unenviable position. So, when he turned 94 in July 2023, he decided it was time. He was ready to jump from 13,000 feet.
Mitchell said he was not scared even one bit by the experience. “Just the exhilaration of it was wonderful. Floating down through the beautiful sky – it’s hard to describe it; it was just so exhilarating,” he added. He said there was “nothing like it,” calling his first skydiving experience “wonderful.” He even said he’d be happy to do it again.

“When I hit the ground, someone said, ‘Would you do it again?’ I said, ‘Yeah! I’d do it again tomorrow!'” he said. The real message, it seems, is that you’re only ever as old as you think you are.
Ben Mitchell – Young At Heart
Mitchell’s incredible longing to experience new things even at the age of 94 is hardly surprising upon further inspection. Despite his age, he is extremely active and works out for an hour and a half every day. He is also an avid athlete and competitor. In fact, he competes in the Burlington Senior Games every year. His collection of medals has reached a whopping 215, out of which 189 are gold.

Mitchell’s story really highlights that aspiration and ambition don’t have to run out as time passes by. Whether you are 24 or 94, Mitchell’s message is one that could do you good. It’s a healthy mentality that keeps him to be more adventurous regardless of his circumstances. For his next mission: Ben Mitchell plans to take a hot air balloon ride.
