Many people dream of adventure but few dare to embark on an arduous journey. However, Micheal Kookendoffer, a 71-year-old Kentuckian,  stands out as an inspiration. Despite his age, he set out on an adventure to hike the Appalachian Trail. To paint a picture of how gruesome this adventure can be, this is a grueling 2,200-mile odyssey from Georgia to Maine.

Only a select few, approximately 3,000 individuals (out of around 3,000,000 who attempt this), manage to conquer this monumental trek each year. Kookendoffer, with his immense 0affinity for cigars, emerged as one of these triumphant souls.

Kookendoffer’s Appalachian Trail journey commenced in March, weaving through 14 states amidst rugged terrain. Mind you, this is not an ordinary journey. This is an adventure that tests not only one’s physical stamina but also the determination to pull through and succeed. So, through the course of six grueling months, he navigated treacherous mountainous terrain, traversed encounters with wildlife, and marveled at the mystique of wild mushrooms that adorned his path. Along the way, he forged deep connections with fellow hikers, most of them half his age. He notes that he knows each of them by their unique trail nicknames.

Among his trail mates were ‘Toaster,’ ‘Bandit,’ ‘Bob Ross,’ ‘Moose Jaw,’ and ‘Chili Pepper’. To Kookendoffer’s friends, he was affectionately referred to as ‘Stogie.’ His one indulgence on this arduous journey? Cigars. “I always had anywhere between five and ten cigars in my pack,” he confessed. It was a small luxury that added a touch of comfort to his challenging days.

Kookendoffer’s remarkable journey also carried the weight of a medical history. A decade prior, he faced a heart attack, necessitating a stent and multiple medications. Heeding his doctors’ advice for regular exercise, he embarked on the Appalachian Trail. Despite being well over the average age of hikers, he chose to undertake this life-altering journey. He later said,“It’s now or never because you never know what the next year is going to be.
