In an icy battlefield, time and tradition have met in a dazzling celebration of sporting legacy. The hockey rinks of Cheshire High School recently witnessed a milestone moment. After the completion of five glorious decades, the air was filled with tales of their victories. The high school organized a spectacular reunion, including players from every season. The victorious State Championship Squad of 1978, too, was a part of the glorious event.

The rink was beaming with nostalgia as the legendary player, Rick Fitzgerald, graced the event. Not only Fitzgerald but also the scorer of the team’s inaugural goal, Larry Richards, was present at the reunion. The cherry on the cake was added with a thrilling game against North Haven High School. Let’s delve into the reunion and freezing fight between Cheshire High and North Haven High School.

From 1974 to 2024: Cheshire High’s hockey glory echoes through the ages

As the Cheshire hockey team celebrated its legacy of 50 years, several legendary players became a part of the event. All-time goals leader and a cherished and important member of the Cheshire High School Hockey Team, Rick Fitzgerald was present at the celebration. Fitzgerald, sharing his unwavering love for the game and the enduring bonds that he has formed on the icy grounds, said, “I love these people, absolutely love it”. 

Reminiscing the old days, he further added, “It was a great part of our lives.” Fitzgerald to everyone’s amazement still magically fits his hockey jacket that he used to wear during the first season of the team (1974-75). He added, “It was so much fun back then to go through what we went through with the state championship and everything else, a great group of kids”.

The inaugural goal scorer of the team, Larry Richards said that he still has preserved the precious puck in his home. Cheshire High School has been the only team to have played and won titles in all three divisions in hockey.

As the event reached its crescendo, the frozen rink soon turned into a battleground as Cheshire High School played a match against North Haven High School.

The current coach of the Cheshire team, Anthony Guisto, shared, “I started playing hockey there and then coming back coaching is kind of coming back full circle,” Guisto has never been a player for the Cheshire High hockey team. Still, during the days of his youth he used to play hockey at the rink in the town. He further continued, “I know a lot of the people. Just bridging the gap between the current players we’re coaching now and the past, it’s great to see the coaches who came before me and the players who have four state titles”.

The match between North Haven High School and Cheshire High ended with a scorecard of 5-3. The match marked Cheshire High’s 5th victory in a row. As the final buzzer resonated, the scoreboard not only reflected a mere win but a testament to fifty years of dedication and unwavering commitment to honoring the legacy that has become synonymous with Cheshire High School’s indomitable spirit on the ice.
