Van Gils is renowned for his promising career, which exhibits marvelous performances in most of his attempts. Nonetheless, his unsuspected violation of punching a cycling competitor landed him a fine of 50 CHP ($55.30). His penalties also included a loss of UCI points. The cycling personality soon recognized his mistake and offered an apology after the controversial event. He sought the path of honesty, admitting, “The gesture was a reaction to the dangerous behavior of another rider, but I know that what I did was wrong.”

Van added how he had acted in reflex, as a reaction to the heat of the moment, but mentioned how it was still wrong. He even accepted that the punching should not have happened, including that he needed to have kept his hand movements limited to the handlebars. Despite the appeal, this controversy shockingly deepened, with Van Gils defending a section of his actions. Apparently, the cycling professional had given some credit for his actions to Bouglas’ behavior, saying his move was in response to the latter’s dangerous riding.

Regrettably, these incidents added to a string of PR challenges for Lotto Dstny. Last month, one of the team’s sports directors was suspended for an incident involving a race marshal during the GP Rik Van Looy in Belgium. A few weeks earlier, the team had even faced criticism over ending its long-standing partnership with bike brand Ridley. The decision caused them adequate reputational damage, while in August, sports director Allan Davis was seen getting fired after allegations of sending ‘inappropriate’ messages to women.
