A 17-year-old schoolboy, Matthew Tsang Hin-chit, recently emerged from a week-long ordeal in the midst of a typhoon in one of Hong Kong’s country parks. In a heartwarming tale of survival, the boy’s miraculous rescue brought hope to a city grappling with the dangers that come with the surge in hiking popularity. Matthew, a student preparing for university entrance exams, had reportedly ventured into Ma On Shan Country Park during his lunch break, unaware of his fate. Shockingly, what unfolded after his decision left the community in immense awe.

Evidence displayed that the teen boy went missing after his departure. While the exact circumstances of his disappearance remain shrouded in mystery, it appeared that he might have fallen sick. As Hongkongers flocked to the scenic hills during the pandemic, the hills echoed not only with the sounds of Matthew’s resilience after he faced a joyful turn of events.

Although he was trapped in the havoc, Tsang’s resourceful planning shone through the mess. Surviving on stream water, leaves, and wild fruits, and sheltering in the cover of bushes, he demonstrated his remarkable determination to fight all odds. Soon, a hunt for Matthew Tsang was initiated, involving an extensive operation that demonstrated the city’s unwavering spirit. Along with this efficient team, 100 police officers, and a search and rescue dog scoured an area spanning 10 square kilometers. Drones, some playing Tsang’s favorite music, and artificial intelligence were also deployed to narrow the search field. The desperate volunteers continued a vivid search as many joined the act, including alumni of Tsang’s school, parents of his friends, and other residents. The joined forces portrayed a heartwarming display of unity, swiftly locating the unfortunate hiking victim. Tsang was airlifted to safety, followed by getting rushed to medical care for initial health evaluations.

Glorious rescue saves a soul

After the accident, Tsang is hoping for a speedy recovery from the damage, while his mother, Amy Chan, celebrated her son’s return as a miracle. This brutal episode also illustrated the pressures that students face, particularly when preparing for crucial exams. Although this was not an ordinary hiking trip, it underscored the perils that lurked within the country parks of the city, which numbered 24. Incredibly, Matthew Tsang’s miraculous rescue was not an isolated incident.

During the same typhoon, a 16-year-old hiker was rescued in Lion Rock Country Park while attempting to walk home. Sadly, a 57-year-old hiker who went missing in Ma On Shan was not as fortunate, as his lifeless body was discovered 20 days after his excursion. As per reports, the pandemic sparked a surge in hiking popularity in Hong Kong, as urban dwellers sought solace in the open spaces of the scenic hills. However, many of these newcomers to the hiking scene were novices who were unprepared for the challenges that nature can pose.

Unfortunately, the statistics exhibited a sobering tale, with over 20 hiking-related deaths, a level up from the count of 14 in the previous year. With more people gaining a passion for this thrilling sport, records witnessed over 1,000 hiking-related searches, marking a significant increase from fewer than 200 in 2019. Significantly, Matthew Tsang’s incredible survival from this accident also reminded everyone that venturing into the wilderness always requires cautionary protocols.
