While this fatal incident engulfed a group of travelers, authorities later reported rescuing the four other stranded victims.
The hiking courses near the Maiori Canal region sparked chaos as it made headlines with a wrathfully descending snowstorm. Located in the heart of Abruzzo, the venue has always been popular for its ski mountaineering allure. However, it all went south on January 14 when five hikers were caught in the avalanche, urging swift actions from the local authorities.

Around 4 p.m. on the fateful Sunday afternoon, officials noted receiving a distressing call for help through the hiking peaks. Prompting helicopter rescue services to respond immediately, the incident took a tumultuous course as it exhibited unfavorable conditions. While the emergency rescuers faced an unforeseen delay, they sadly struggled to reach the avalanche site.
Unfortunately, the surrounding conditions seemed critical when the hiking rescue team reached their destination. Upon discovering the unresponsive L’Aquila resident, officials later identified him as Luca Nunzi, igniting concerns for the other trapped victims. While the four breathing travelers were taken back to safety, they were seen equipped with crampons and ice axes.
Sharing details from the hiking tragedy, the lucky survivors recalled valiantly calling for help. As they were quickly evacuated, members of the alpine rescue team gave out daunting narratives from the mission, remarking, “There was an avalanche warning in a canal”, as they added, “Time was too late because such activities are usually carried out in the early morning.”

With the elements around proving relentless, the paramedics arriving in helicopters also faced a harsh reality on the ground. Confirming Nunzi’s untimely demise, the hiking rescue operations unfolded into late hours. As the four others were recovered in the afternoon, they seemed physically unharmed but emotionally scarred for life.
Notably, one hiking survivor from the group emphasized the haunting helplessness they felt at the scene. While physically unharmed from the avalanche, they revealed sobering truths about nature’s force surpassing human capabilities. As the officials reported the avalanche being triggered in the Valle Lupara area, they sent alerts on the storm sweeping down with merciless forces.
