Although the group planned to explore the Kanab Creek area and descend into the canyon, all the plans took a backseat. Formanek accompanied by another hiker from the group, decided to venture deep into the canon. However, being engrossed in the hike led to the duo getting separated from the main group. At that moment of time, Formanek misplaced a step leading to his fall, and ultimately ended up dislocating his shoulder and immobilized with excruciating pain.
In his interview given to 12 News, Formanek said, “The only logical thing to do was for my friend to catch up to the other people in front of us that did have satellite devices and see if they could request a rescue.” Realizing the helpless situation they have put themselves into, Formanek requested his companion to leave him temporarily in the pursuit of locating the rest of the group to seek assistance.

The agonizing prolonged wait for help
Formanek had a good stock of food and water to survive on, but the agonizing pain made every minute seem like an hour. As the daylight approached darkness, he started giving up on his hope of getting rescued. However, his friends succeeded in contacting law enforcement with the help of their satellite-capable phones. Soon, a helicopter from the State Department of Public Safety arrived at the spot. Using his headlamp, Formanek signaled the rescue officials, enabling them to swiftly extract him from the canyon.
The initial post on Formanek’s rescue on behalf of the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office and Search contained inaccuracies stating that the injured were left behind by his friends. However, after being stabilized, Foremanek confirmed that his friends were not responsible for his situation and emphasized the fact that they did their best to assist him, thereby correcting the narrative.
