Situated in the west-central part of Florida, near Tampa, the natural preserve that spreads over an area of 2500 acres, became the sight where the hikers lost themselves. As daylight waned, the hikers made a distress call. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office informed,“We received a call from one of the lost hikers at 6:25 pm. They mentioned being lost for over four hours and attempting to find their way out unsuccessfully. They decided to call us as it got dark, and they found themselves in a swampy area.”

In a coordinated rescue effort, a police helicopter sprang into action equipped with an infrared camera. It scanned the landscape aiming to trace the exact location of the lost hikers. For the trapped hikers, it was only the torch in their cellphones that served as a beacon in the dark. Hence, the investigation officials took advantage of utilizing night vision goggles.

The visual gear assisted in the process of swiftly identifying the entrapped hikers by recognizing their body heat signatures. Amidst the darkness of the swamp, the goggles traced down the individuals through the bright white silhouettes that indicated their presence. It was around 7:30 p.m., the Aviation Unit validated the whereabouts. The ground patrol deputies then took up the information to reach the stranded hikers.
