Trading helicopter for hiking boots, former Royal Navy pilot tells a tale of resilience that echoes louder than the blades of a Sea King helicopter.  Charlie Peschardt embarks on a 100 km hiking odyssey and is about to conquer new heights three years after battling and overcoming kidney cancer.

The 62-mile hiking journey along the Devon/Cornwall border underscores his newly found purpose in life. Peschradt looks forward to pursuing the goals of his life adding a charitable touch as he wishes to raise funds amounting to £7,500, ie. $9000 to support the charity, Kidney Cancer UK.

A hiker’s triumph over adversity

Having a professionally settled life, being a seasoned RNAS Culdrose-based Sea King pilot, Peschradt’s story took an unexpected turn in 2020. Waking up with back pain, seemed like a routine discomfort to Peschradt. However, with further diagnosis, it unraveled into a challenging diagnosis of stage-three kidney cancer.  

Hence, the 44-year-old former naval pilot, embarked on his fight to make a victorious stride beyond illness. He got his right kidney removed marking the commencement of a daunting journey followed by surgery and subsequent immunotherapy.

Switching his role to hiking, he will be covering the picturesque Devon and Cornwall border. Peschradt’s interview with BBC echoed confidence and enthusiasm as he shared, “I’m a bit nervous but know that I have done decent preparation and other than extreme weather or injury, the rest of the barriers are mental and feel confident I have the mental resilience to push through those.” Recovering from cancer, he decided to celebrate his victory uniquely. 

Hiker raising funds for hope and sustainability

More than just a personal challenge, Peschradt’s 100km hike is his mission to contribute towards a charitable cause. He is hopeful about raising £7,500 to support an organization that has played a pivotal role during his journey towards recovery, Kidney Cancer UK. Besides funding the organization that shared his journey, Peschradt will be ensuring to make a positive impact on the environment at large.

A portion of the funds raised amount will go to the charity, Reduce Our Carbon. With this, the hiker will be reflecting his commitment to a sustainable and eco-friendly nature in the future. Fighting cancer for three years, Peschradt is willing to gladly encounter no matter what challenges the 100 km hike poses to him. This hike in a way will become a metaphor for overcoming barriers echoing the resilience that carried him through the physically and mentally exhausting journey of cancer treatment.

Besides counting footsteps on the hiking trail, Charlie Peschardt will be counting positive impacts on the people suffering from cancer and on the environment at large. Striding toward Plymouth, the hiker evolves to be a symbol of hope and resilience navigating through adversity and inspiring a narrative of triumph.
