Hiking was not new to the Brown family. Lucy’s late grandfather, Ray Brown, was an avid hiker and an accomplished outdoorsman. His skills were reflected as he became the first Western Australian to set foot atop Mt. Everest in 1999. Speaking about their recent expedition, Lucy’s father, Scott, stated that Ray would have been very proud had he been around to witness the incredible feat of the family.

The family sat down together and, after careful calculations, decided to take up the challenge. Soon after the decision was finalized, the entire family started their drills, which continued for almost a year. Finally, they embarked on their journey as they successfully completed the perilous trek to the Nepal base camp, which was 5634 meters above sea level.

Reflecting on their journey, 40-year-old Scott Brown stated, “It was a pretty special experience…[We] definitely didn’t take it lightly, put a lot of training into it … there was, I guess, some risk but it ended up working out well.” While the family’s mission was successfully accomplished, Scott could not help but let nostalgia hit him about his daughter and Ray.

Scott Brown lets his emotions flow

Lucy’s father expressed immense joy for the fact that Lucy was able to connect with her grandfather this young. Echoing the same emotions, Scott stated, “Being able to take my daughter to see her grandfather’s memorial … To know that her grandfather sat on up on the top of Everest 25 years ago and to be in that space with the family – it was beautiful.”
