James Nicholls, a resident of Sussex and an employee of the South Downs National Park, planned the monumental hike a few years ago. But just a year ago, before the trek, he was unexpectedly diagnosed with latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) in November 2021. But Nicholls was not ready to give up on his lifelong dream that easily.

With unyielding passion and determination, he was all ready to fight against all odds and push himself to the limit. Nicholls successfully climbed more than 8000 meters and reached his destination. After over 12 grueling days, he conquered Everest’s base camp.

Nicholls said, “I don’t think I could have pushed my body any further trying to make it to Base Camp.” Narrating about his hiking experience, he added, “We trekked 90 miles and climbed more than 8,000 meters over 12 days. It was an incredible experience. The people of Nepal are amazing and made the experience what it was—a true,  once-in- lifetime achievement.

He began his trek on November 11, 2023, from Yapton, near Arundel. However, achieving this monumental feat was not just a personal achievement for Nicholls. The courageous 29-year-old man has already raised a fund of about $889 (£700) for Diabetes UK. He is confident enough that this fund will increase as long as people continue to donate to the noble cause.

Nicholls revealed how the unexpected diagnosis of diabetes at such a young age came as a shock to him. “The diagnosis was a bit of a shock. There is diabetes in my wife’s family but none in mine, so although I knew about the condition, I wasn’t expecting to have it  myself, he said. But nothing could pose a barrier between him and his dreams.
