All thanks to Sawyer Howard, the young adventurer a remarkable tale unfolds amidst the rugged landscape and breathtaking beauty of New Hampshire. At the tender age of 10 years, he sets his sights on the adventurous feat of exploring new trails while at the same time basking in the beauty of nature.

Part of his adventure will be the mountains with staggering altitudes of 4000 feet. As Howard aims at covering all the challenging peaks sparsed across a total of 48 states, let us delve into this article to find his inspiring story.

Relishing the journey while heading toward his passion

For the young resident from Stoddard, Howard has set a goal for himself to conquer all 48 hikes. However, he has given himself a timespan within which he has to accomplish the mission, the deadline being the day he turns 11 which is on October 31.

Driven by the mantra stating “If it was easy, everybody would go do it,” Howard proudly possesses the asset of successfully completing the trek to 45 mountains and at present is only left with three more peaks to hike to achieve his ultimate goal. In his journey, he has got the substantial support of his father, Larry Howard as he joined Howard in his trekking journey.

Apart from being a challenge, his father and Honward shared a passion for hiking since he was five years old. Howard reiterated the incident when he was exposed to the sport with Sentinel Source, “My dad inspired me by doing the 48. He just took me on one of his hikes, and I fell in love. Hiking is just amazing because you get to be outside.”

As a memoir of his accomplishments, Howard maintains a comprehensive book with intricate details of the White Mountains. Even though he exudes excitement, what makes him unique is his determination to repeat the challenge all over again. However, this time in order to add an exciting touch to his journey, Howard looks forward to traversing through different trails to touch the summit. 

In his journey, Howard has received noteworthy support from his school backing him up passively. Maggie Foorestall, Howard’s teacher at James Faulkner Elementary School shared her opinion through an email stating,  “It’s such a long-term goal he’s worked toward for multiple years. He always beams with pride and talks so passionately when describing his latest hiking adventure on Monday morning. I’m certain that this is only the beginning of a lifelong journey for Sawyer!”

Taking inspiration from this support, the father and son are now preparing to accomplish the ultimate leg of their long journey. Howard and his father are all set to excel in the grand finale while tackling Mount Tecumseh near Waterville Valley and Owl’s Head in Franconia on Saturday followed by Cannon Mountain on the next day culminating their journey.

As Sawyer is heading towards leaving a mark while accomplishing his arduous adventure, he is eager to celebrate his win with his favorite snacks, relishing his beef jerky and Skittles. His journey to the top of the Cannon Mountain is just a snippet of his otherwise exhaustive journey setting him as the ideal example of indomitable spirit.
