A shocking incident that shadows Hong Kong’s Marathon glory

The 30-year-old enthusiastic soul participated in the half-marathon in Hong Kong. At around 1 p.m., the runner was declared dead by medical experts. The man suddenly collapsed in the middle of the marathon, and he was immediately provided with first aid. He was then taken to the Rutronjee Hospital in Wan Chai. But unfortunately, he could not be saved.

The participants and organizers of the half-marathon were left grief-stricken. The Hong Kong and China Association of Athletics Affiliates, a co-organizer of the marathon, confirmed the unfortunate demise of the participant and conveyed their condolences to the grieving family. The authority did not reveal any further details or the identity of the participant.

Such an unfortunate incident harmed the spirit of the much-awaited event. But the race must continue. Thus, despite its untimely demise, more than 74,000 runners participated in the event, which included both commoners and political leaders. With such large participation, many participants had fallen sick and thus had to seek medical help.

A total of 842 contenders were provided with aid and medical attention during the marathon. A few things went out of hand, and 34 runners had to be admitted to the hospital. Four participants were in serious condition, and one was reportedly in a critical state.

Lobo Louie Hung-tak, an expert from the Education University of Hong Kong, discussed the probable rate of occurrence of such fatalities. It has been revealed that such situations might occur at a rate of one in 100,000. He further added that such situations often result from untreated or undiscovered heart conditions.
