The opening of a sports complex is to be a celebrated affair, but the city of Cranston finds itself in a precarious situation. The city officials of Cranston expressed their displeasure with the company marketing the new facility under the name TopGolf Providence.
After years of planning, the project finally got underway on the Sockanosset Cross Road site in July. The city’s mayor is adamant about what it should be called now, that the pillars are in place and three stories are now constructed.

The debate has been centred on Mayor Ken Hopkins, who has voiced his displeasure with the name selection. Mayor Hopkins offers suggestions like “TopGolf Rhode Island” or “TopGolf Cranston” as alternatives, since he thinks the name should reflect the town or city where the business is located.
“If they want to have it TopGolf Providence, take the poles down, take the building down and move it to Providence,” Hopkins told the media. “I told them over a month ago we are adamant about the naming rights. I would want TopGolf Rhode Island or TopGolf Cranston.”
Hopkins claims that the business told him that choosing TopGolf Providence was a part of their marketing plan. He complained about representatives calling businesses to advertise Providence. He added that his office is reviewing the contract to see if there is a way the two parties can come to an agreement and that TopGolf hasn’t responded to his calls in a month.
Cranston residents take on the controversy
The residents of the city, while speaking to the media, had a different perspective on the entire issue. Majority of them believed that a tussle over a name did not seem fruitful and the community rather enjoy the facility and overlook the name.

“Why would you be upset about it? What are you going to get by being upset? If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen. All you can do is enjoy it,” said a resident while talking to the media.
Mayor Hopkins, although seemed adamant about pursuing the issue and vowed to not relent before they have changed the name.
“We worked hard to bring this here, I mean, I’ve said it from Day 1 this is the biggest recreational facility since Rocky Point existed,” Hopkins added. “We don’t want them coming here thinking they’re going to Providence. We want them to think they’re coming to Cranston.”
