Tragedy struck the skies above New York a few days back. Their aircraft was about to soar high. But a sudden unprecedented heart-pounding collision abruptly cut short two lives near Lake Placid Airport.

The victims were not just ordinary individuals. Both of them have remarkably shaped their journey, and this has made the already tragic incident even more poignant. A former NFL star and a distinguished aviation expert lost their lives in the fateful incident.

A tragic loss for the aviation and NFL industry

Russ Francis has been a member of the New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers. He has played for them for a total of 13 seasons. His talent gained him an entry into the prestigious Oregon Sports Hall of Fame (1993). He retired in 1988 after creating innumerable golden moments throughout his sports career.

63-year-old Richard McSpadden was an aviation safety expert. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s Air Safety Institute has been focusing on curbing crashes of general aviation airplanes. And McSpadden has been the head of the institute. Little did he know that he would lose his life falling prey to a situation he had been handling and managing for a lifetime. 

In an unfortunate incident, McSpadden and the 70-year-old former NFL player Russ Francis, died due to the Cessna crash last Sunday. The date was the 1st of October when the souls were lost due to the unforeseen grasp of fate.

They were flying on a Cessna Cardinal and it unfortunately crashed near the runway of Lake Placid Airport. According to the statement of the New York State Police Department, “striking an earth embankment,” the aircraft crashed.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association stated, “The Cessna 177 Cardinal in which Richard was in the right seat experienced an emergency after takeoff.” They further added more about the unfortunate incident, “The airplane attempted to return to the airport but failed to make the runway”.

Tributes pouring for the luminaries

The team of New England Patriots took to social media to pay tribute to the player. “We are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of former New England Patriots tight end Russ Francis. Our condolences are extended to Francis’ family and friends.”

According to McSpadden’s biography, as mentioned by the association, he has “led 100 flight demonstrations flying the lead aircraft”. He was the former commander of the US Air Force Thunderbirds. McSpadden was respected and admired among his circles and they have been mourning his sudden demise.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft in a statement talked about how good Francis was in the sport. Kraft said, “Russ was a fan favorite throughout his playing career. He was a dynamic player on the field who had an even bigger personality off it. He knew no boundaries, pushed the limits and lived his life to the fullest”.

The cause behind the crash of the Cessna Cardinal remains unclear. Federal investigators have been investigating the case to bring out the reasons behind the crash that led to such an unfortunate incident.
