Furman football star Bryce Stanfield’s inspiring journey cut short

21-year-old Bryce Stanfield breathed his last on February 9, 2024. On a usual Wednesday morning, the Furman University football team was enjoying their daily workout regimen when suddenly, Stanfield collapsed in the midst of the workout session. Following the incident, Stanfield died on Friday, leaving his family and team completely heartbroken.
The shattering piece of news was circulated among the Furman community by the President of Greenville, S.C.-based school, Dr. Elizabeth Davis. She wrote in a letter, “It is with great sorrow that I write to inform you that Furman University student Bryce Stanfield passed away this afternoon surrounded by his family and his Furman family.”
Stanfield was a major in junior health sciences besides being a defensive tackle for the Paladins Football team. In the same letter, Dr Davis further added, “According to medical personnel, Bryce collapsed unexpectedly at a morning workout on Wednesday. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was placed on life support.”
Dr Davis’ letter also stated that Stanfield aspired to attend dental school after he had completed his graduation, but unfortunately, it remained unfilled. He read to young children in local schools and also made time to meet patients admitted at the Greenville Children’s Hospital.
The coach of their football team, Clay Hendrix, in a recent statement said, “We are heartbroken beyond measure with Bryce’s sudden passing.” He also stated what a gem of a person and athlete Stanfield was: “Bryce was an outstanding young man and an equally fine student, football player, and friend.”

Stanfield was one of the most cherished members of his team who contributed immensely to the success of his team. “In every sense he was the best representative we could have. His passing is one of the most difficult things Furman football has ever encountered, but our faith and so many wonderful memories Bryce provided us will help sustain us all in the days ahead,” the coach added.
Furman University’s Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, Jason Donnelly shared that Stanfield was not only a great player and teammate but was also “a beautiful soul, a loving son, loyal friend and a great student.”
