Football is pretty intense on an ordinary day. However, on a big match day, the atmosphere escalates to tension! Players and fans are just one dangerous move away from taking their battles a bit too far. This applies two-fold to high school games, with young blood coming in hot. So, it was just a matter of time before we saw yet another fight break out. And that’s exactly what happened.
Cross Creek and Savannah High School were playing down to the wire, and the pressure got the best of the players. This resulted in a bench-clearing fight between players and staff last Friday. Onlookers, including parents, had much to say about what had transpired.

A Cross Creek parent who was at the football game recorded a video of the brawl. It involved players and staff from both teams, scrambling their way onto the field as things escalated. Cross Creek’s parents claim that a Savannah team footballer initiated the fight. However, the fight escalated after a Cross Creek player came off the bench to intervene.

The parents also claim that one of their kids was assaulted by an opposing coach. The same coach also reportedly grabbed another player by the helmet and threw him to the ground. The GHSA has placed both schools on severe warning statuses while also fining the schools $1,500 each. Due to the severity of the incident, the Georgia High School Association also ruled that both teams must forfeit their next game. As investigations proceed, many student-athletes are facing suspensions.

Meanwhile, parents are concerned the consequences are unnecessarily severe. One parent agreed with suspensions, but claimed, “They have to pay fines and then they have to pinpoint players that will be suspended. I don’t think that’s right, I think that’s excessive.”
Parental Appeals and Post-Suspension Plans
Parents have also asked the schools to show more support. Many called for a special meeting for the athletes and their parents so that their voices could be heard. “Right now, Cross Creek, the only support they have is from the parents and the community that has came together,” one parent said.

Officials have also discussed the possibility of the football teams meeting up after their suspensions are served. It’s unclear whether this conversation will take place or not. At the time of writing, this is only the second time this season that officials decided to end a high school game this early. On August 18, in the first week of the season, the game between Benedictine and Jenkins was called to an early end after several “disturbances” in the stands and around the campus.
