Lubick’s battle against the disease started with an exhaustive testing process followed by a suitable treatment plan at a Denver-area hospital. While he undergoes treatment under the supervision of experts from the Anschutz Centre for Advance Medicine, former colleagues and players have come forward to exhibit their support.

His unwavering dedication to the sport inspired him to work remotely without taking a break. Lubick carried on with his responsibility via Zoom, participating in meetings discussing breaking down opposing defenses.

Lance Leipold, the coach credited by Lubick shared his opinion with ESPN, appreciating his commitment, “Matt has made great contributions to our offensive success in this analyst role, and that’s helped this program in ways that many people haven’t seen. His courage, faith and passion to want to contribute to this program while he’s battling this has really been remarkable. Our prayers are with him.”

Power of relationship to tread forward in life

It was in July 2022 that Kansas sought his guidance and hired Lubick as their coach. Beyond sports, he kept himself physically fit by participating in marathons. After running 16 miles for the Boston Marathon in April, he started to feel some physical discomfort and visited the doctor to get treated immediately so that he would not have to lose any days of training that led him to the diagnosis of leukemia.

In an attempt to seek inspiration in his journey battling against acute myeloid leukemia, he consulted with Chuck Pagano, the former coach of the Indianapolis Colts. While Lubick ran low on motivation, he consulted with Pagano, drawing inspiration from his journey battling against the disease as he had found a new purpose of life, that is, fundraising.

Learning from his own experience as a coach, he has taken life challenges as opportunities to grow and improve himself for the better. Besides, he has garnered some remarkable relationships both with players and colleagues that have acted as a push to move forward during times of distress.
