The 19th Hangzhou Asian Games marked a remarkable history for South Korea. In the epee fencing sport, the South Korean women’s team has triumphed in ending the 21-year-old hiatus and making their return to the podium. 

The Korean female epee fencing team grabbed the gold medal after a thrilling match held at Hangzhou Dianzi University Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China. Apart from their determination to win the prize, the moment marked a significant milestone at the Asian Games in women’s epee fencing.   

Reclaiming the victory after 21 years

In South Korea, the Asian Games hold an esteemed position for men, on seizing a gold prize they are granted a military exemption that is compulsory for every male citizen of the nation. Based on the reports of The Korea Times, before the women’s team, the men also claimed the Asiad championships title.

However, the victory of the Korean female epee fencing team has been equally celebrated for their unwavering determination and resilience making way to success in this category after a long pause of 21 years.

The remarkable skills and mastery have been shown by, namely, Choi In-jeong, Kang Young-mi, Song Se-ra and Lee Hye-in. This South Korean quartet defeated their opponent Hong Kong by taking the lead of 36-34. This victory signified a remarkable achievement for the country while it led to a remarkable milestone for the women’s epee fencing in the Asian Games.

Dual victory for Choi In-jeong

Within the Korean epee fencing team, Choi In-jeong has outshined herself by etching her name in the history of the Asian Games. She became the first South Korean fencer to take two gold medals in her charge at Hangzhou. Earlier in this competition, Choi’s victory invigorated her performance while competing as a team. Her dedication to her art paired with her excellent talent allowed her potential to be practiced in reality.

After 2002, South Korea with the endeavour of the women’s team epee again made it to the top in the Asian Games this year. The victory of the  team after such a long hiatus serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes across the nation. At par performance, both in the men’s and the women’s categories solidified South Korea’s spot in the Asian Games as the fencing powerhouse. 
The 19th Hangzhou Asian Games bestowed an outstanding opportunity for South Korea to showcase its talent in the epee fencing category. Making it to the top, after a significant period, the female epee fencing team yet again proved that losing hope is strictly outlawed in the world of sports.
