People draw inspiration from different sources. Some find it within, while others seek it externally. For Devin Moreau, it was ‘eight words’ and his life took a remarkable turn. Like everyone else, the COVID-19 pandemic 2020 has brought a massive transformation to Tyngsboro residents, resulting in a sedentary lifestyle.

Being a ‘couch potato’ as Moreau describes himself, he sank himself into the world of video games. However, eight words said by his mother elevated his life, pushing him to create records in this sports category. Let us delve into Moreau’s journey towards excelling as a sportsman.

Even though during his eighth grade, Moreau had been associated with playing football, he failed to trust his abilities to move further in the sport. His mother suggested that he “Get out of the house. Go do something,” and it was then he was provided with different options, including golf, cheerleading, and cross-country running

The Greater Lowell tech student rejected every other sport and took to running, having the least premonition about the positive impact of this decision on his life. From the beginning, Moreau exhibited his prowess in the sport, just like his pursuit of securing the top position in video games.

Moreau started his journey by running 3.1 miles (in 24 minutes) during his first JV season. He gradually succeeded in excelling as one of the premier runners in the state and creating an all-time record. Matt Murphy, the head coach, shares a snippet of Moreau’s journey with The Sun, “Freshman year he came to us and you could definitely tell that he had athletic potential but he wasn’t necessarily a runner yet.”

Unprecedented championship showcases Moreau’s resolution

Even though he admits that his progress was hindered by initial slowness since it was a whole new experience for him to alter his habit from devoting hours to video games to accepting a physically agile lifestyle. Moreau shared his experience with The Sun, stating, “That JV year, my nickname was ‘two left feet’ because I was so slow.”

However, he has adhered to eight words, namely confidence, determination, drive, commitment, goals, strength, energy and leadership to navigate himself to the peak of athletic skillfulness. In this way, Moreau led the Gryphons straightaway to three consecutive undefeated seasons, clinched Commonwealth Athletic Conference championships three consecutive times along with 17 straight dual meet victories.

From here on, his victory spree continued with earning the title of the CAC Division 1 Runner of the Year and securing his spot as a Sun All-Star. His grit and determination helped him to smash Great Lowell’s record by 30 seconds in competing in a 5K race within 15:39. His journey from completing JV races in 24 minutes to triumphing in varsity races within only 15 minutes serves as a stark example of the power of determination.
