Marking the serene diving zones of the Surin Islands, a popular tourism locality in southern Thailand, the tragic mishap was recorded on December 23. Igniting its deadly course around 9 in the morning, the accident left Millie’s boat grappling at four nautical miles from the island chain. A distressing call for help reached the local authorities, and they mentioned rushing to the scene.

While the emergency responders were informed before the diving boat started sinking, they were notified of 12 saved lives, rescued by a passing fishing boat. Among these rescued tourists were Young’s friends, the Degregorios, and their children, Oska and Daisy, although Millie herself still remained unaccounted for.

Searching campaign gains further momentum

As the officials narrated details from the diving accident, they claimed Young and another crew member were tragically dragged into the treacherous waters. However, despite the direness of the situation, rescue professionals continued with persistent attempts of hope, trying their best to locate the unfortunate divers.

Subsequently, the navy officials were joined by helicopters and local diving experts, scouring the currents of the Andaman Sea in a desperate searching session. Guided by Governor Supoj Rodruang Na Nongkhai, the rescue teams’ relentless pursuits were highlighted by Rear Admiral Pongmit Narongkul.

Undeterred by the strong winds hindering the diving mission, the authoritative crew also rallied cargo and fishing vessels to continue their night-long quest. Adding urgency to the searching venture, thunderstorms were reported looming over the region, further complicating an already tough ordeal.

Revealing updates on the rescue program, Admiral Narongkul shared vivid details on Millie’s unforgiving absence, stating, “There are cargo and fishing ships in the area” as he added, “They have been instructed to continue searching at night, until the missing people are found.” Regrettably, the British diving enthusiast was later recognized as an artist residing in Thailand since 2007, known for her exhibited artwork at Neilson Hays Library.
