VIDEO: Tragic Collision of Car With Cyclists at Gulf Stream Sparks Instagram Users to Rally for Road Safety

A video of a routine morning by a group of cyclists that turned awry has left Instagram fans and the cycling community in shock. Amidst the serene landscapes of Gulf Stream, Florida, an unimaginable tragedy unfolded that exposed the unpredictable dangers lurking on the open road. 

The shocking footage unveils the heart-wrenching collision that turned a group’s leisurely cycling excursion into a somber reminder of the fragility of life. In the video, a collision involving an SUV and a group of eight cyclists has been captured.

Fateful encounter of the cyclists

At the break of dawn on January 4, Thursday, at around 6 a.m., a 2020 Kia Soul crashed with a group of eight cyclists. Based on the reports, the crash transpired when the vehicle traveled south on the west side of North Ocean Boulevard.

The video, posted on Instagram and released by Florida Highway Patrol, shows a group of cyclists pedaling through A1A when all of a sudden, the car first crashes into a cyclist. Owing to the impact of the collision, the cyclist fell, and the trail continued as the vehicle moved past, injuring the rest of the cyclists that came in the way.  

As per the investigations that followed, a 77-year-old woman from Lantan has been arrested for causing serious injuries to the cyclist. Among the group of injured, one cyclist passed away succumbing to injuries, and the rest of the group has been hospitalized for further medical assistance.        

Fans’ call for action 

In the comment section of the released video, members of the community have shared their concerns about the urgency of road safety. A fan-made to the comment section sharing his personal experience on A1A and the lack of safety in the mentioned stretch, “The bicyclists on A1A are the absolute worst, if you’ve driven the road on any day at almost any time, you know exactly what I’m talking about.”

Another fan came up with a suggestion urging cyclists to adhere to a separate path and not share roadways with four-wheelers, “I keep telling people bikes belong on the sidewalk and not on the road. Regardless my philosophy is. When walking in the jungle do you give way to the elephant or assume he will give way to you.”

The tragic incident involving the cyclist encouraged a person to come with the demand of lanes assigned for only cyclists, “Why don’t we have protected bike lanes like other first world countries?” 

At the wake of dawn, due to poor vision often makes cyclists prone to accidents which has been highlighted in the comment, “No bicycles till daylight” Another fan draws attention to the importance of medical tests for old age drivers, “All drivers should be tested after 65. It’s not safe for anyone.” Disregarding the speed limit and choice of an opposite lane gave rise to the catastrophe. 

Following the tragedy, the community’s grief turns into a rallying cry for action. As the community mourns the loss of a fellow cyclist and prays for the speedy recovery of those injured, there lies an urgent call for justice. In the wake of such a tragedy, the imperative of accountability to ensure the protection of all road users gained prominence.
