The incident unfolded early in the race, mere minutes after the cyclists set out on their arduous Il Lombardia journey. Evenepoel, along with fellow riders Sjoerd Bax and Giovanni Aleotti, collided while navigating a treacherous bend in the road.  The collision left Evenepoel with injuries to his knee and elbow.

Despite the early crash, Evenepoel was unshaken in his pursuit. The race had been marked by rumors of a potential merger between Jumbo-Visma and Soudal-QuickStep, causing speculation about his future. However, Evenepoel’s focus remained laser-sharp. He refused to let external distractions deter him from his goal. In the days leading up to Il Lombardia, he displayed a calm and composed demeanor, unwavering in his commitment to the task at hand.

Even as the crash threatened to cast a shadow over his Il Lombardia journey, Evenepoel’s resilience shone through. With the peloton slowly moving forward, he remounted his bike and rejoined the race. The crowd, both in-person and through screens, bore witness to a true champion’s spirit. Evenepoel’s journey was symbolic of the sport’s essence, where setbacks are not roadblocks but mere detours on the path to success.

The race was far from over, and Evenepoel was aware of the challenges that lay ahead. With formidable competitors like Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič in the mix, he recognized that the true test of his mettle was yet to come. However, his spirit remained unbroken, and he understood that, in cycling, as in life, the ultimate victory often belongs to those who persevere.
