Belgian Cyclist Remco Evenepoel who recently won the Vuelta A Espana race suffered an injury scare in the recently concluded race. A woman appeared suddenly in front of the cyclist just after the finish line, causing them to collide and Remco to fall off his bike. Neither of them suffered any horrific injuries, but it did result in some bloodshed.

Evenepoel seemed to be taken aback by the group of spectators located around 50 meters past the finish line. The woman who got hit by Evenepoel was not aware of his arrival and moved in his direction.

After the incident, it was very evident that the security at the finish line was not up to the mark. There have been times previously as well where the cyclists have faced such kind of problems. TIt is important to take care of the safety of the cyclists and the audience. What could have resulted in a serious injury seemed to just brush off both the individuals.

“[There is] something with the safety. It was just 50 meters from the finish line, it’s the third day in a row. It’s a bit breaking my balls now,” Evenepoel said after the incident.

After the camera panned back to the 23-year-old cyclist, we could see Evenepoel getting back up with blood leaking from his face and head. Since the race was to be continued over to the next day as well, it was good to see that Evenepoel looked calm in the situation and did not panic .

What causes these inadvertent crashes?

We often see that in World Class events like these, along with the athletes the spectators also stay very involved. Many of them want to see their idol win medals and try and be a part of their celebration. Not only in cycling but in events like the track and field as well there were times where the camera man got in the way of the athletes as a result they crashed against each other. Who can forget the legendary moment when the legend Usain Bolt ran into a cameraman once his race was over?

At the end of the day as long as the athletes and their fans do not encounter some serious injuries all these incidents where the fans want to enjoy the moment live are fine, but they should ensure that the safety of the athletes do not get compromised.
