Tragic Collision Claimed the Life of a 51-Year-Old British Dad Riding a Bicycle in Italy

The bicycle escapade of a British chef in Italy led to a tragic outcome. A British father, 51-year-old George Young, got involved in a high-speed hit-and-run while cycling on his way back home on the streets of Italy.  

Hailing originally from Mile End, east London, Young had been a part of the community for five years. The unfortunate incident has left the community in San Bonifacio in shock, probing to explore the details surrounding the tragedy. 

Young’s life cut short on a tragic night

Young had relocated to Italy with his wife and daughter to pursue his professional dreams as a chef at the e di Fiandra restaurant. On the night the tragedy struck, it was raining heavily. It was after finishing his shift that Young headed toward his home on his bicycle, declining the offer of the restaurant owner who offered him a ride home.

Renato Danese, the owner of the restaurant that George used to work for informed Daily Mail, “He said he didn’t want to put anyone to any trouble and so he put his rucksack on and his reflective jacket and left. That was the last we saw of him.”

It was on the next day that concerns grew when Young did not show up for his shift. When all the attempts made by Danese to contact him turned futile, concerned for his safety, the police were informed to locate him. 

The unsettling discovery of the cyclist left the community seeking justice

The efforts made by the investigating authorities led them to trace his exact location, tracking Young’s mobile location and using drones. Reaching the sight, the police discovered skid marks on the road on the route that Young cycled on his way back home. Following the investigation, his lifeless body was discovered along with his bike alongside a knocked-over road sign.

According to the initial investigation, since Young was struck at high speed, his body was propelled 100 meters into a ditch. Later on, a 36-year-old man voluntarily surrendered to the police explaining that he had been on the road at the time when the harrowing incident took place, informing that he had hit something but failed to find any explanation for the damage to his car.

Besides being a famous chef and a doting father, Young was also acclaimed as a DJ. In one of its tributes on Facebook, the Underground Sessions wrote, “Never had a change to meet George in person but spent many a night in the chat or on the mic making each other life. Sorry to everyone who knew him. His presence will be missed.” As the investigation proceeds, the community tries to cope with the irreparable void.

While the suspect is willing to cooperate fully with the police to assist the investigation process, the unfortunate event sheds light on the lack of safety that cyclists are exposed to while sharing the road with four-wheelers. The memory of George Young will be cherished by the community mourning the loss of a beloved member.
