As per the reports provided by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a 77-year-old resident of Lantana was driving a 2020 Kia Soul. She was traveling south on the west side of North Ocean Boulevard. However, the driver inexplicably veered across the center lane divider and at first, collided with a 43-year-old cyclist from Boca Raton.
Owing to the impact of the clash, the cyclist got separated from the vehicle and sustained injuries because of a fatal fall from the cycle, as he tumbled on the road. The man suffered from incapacitating injuries and was immediately transported to Delray Medical Centre as he needed immediate medical attention.
However, this was just the beginning of the tragedy that awaited as the collision triggered a chain reaction and impacted a group containing seven cyclists. On behalf of the Gulf Stream Police Department, Chief Richard Jones said in a statement, “Typically, crashes involving cyclists are typically cyclist-on-cyclist incidents and not groups of cyclists that are struck by a vehicle.” Among the group of six cyclists, three sustained injuries and were admitted in trauma care

Hence, it has been speculated that reportedly the driver was at fault. With this, concerns have been raised about designating separate paths for cars and bicycle lanes in the stretch of North Ocean Boulevard. In doing so, both the drivers and the cyclists will stay away from stepping into each other’s lanes. In addition to this, in the case of shared roads, enhanced road safety awareness and vigilance are required.
