Evidently, female cyclists undergo numerous physiological factors that influence their training routines, from hormone cycles to body composition. But the biggest hurdle they might face is undoubtedly pregnancy. It transforms a woman’s body, impacts fitness, and also demands adaptations in nutrition. However, a 35-year-old Uno-X rider, Joss Lowden, has reportedly created wonders in a recent feat where she defied all conventional norms and expectations.

Balancing her practice, sleep, and overall lifestyle, Joss showcased her efficiency as she continued cycling through her pregnancy. Tackling about 1,332 meters of climbing, the cyclist set new personal records with this ascent. As an expectant mother in the eighth month of pregnancy, Joss effortlessly conquered the mountainous terrain. This daring venture added to her Strava segments as she demonstrated how motherhood is never a halt to her determination.

Cyclist breaks social norms and personal barriers 

Joss Lowden is a former Hour Record holder, known for her indomitable spirit and dedication to cycling. Three weeks before her due date, Joss astonishingly returned from a two-and-a-half-hour ride in Andorra. Elaborating on her smooth pregnancy experience, the pro cyclist mentioned her ability to cycle, train, hike, swim, and hit the gym throughout the journey. “I didn’t really get sick at the beginning,” Lowden expressed, adding, “I felt a bit queasy sometimes, but generally, if I went out for a bike ride or a hike, I felt better.”

Pregnancy periods undoubtedly challenge female athletes, as many are forced to relinquish control over their bodies and fitness. While childbearing introduces an element of unpredictability, it impacts the cyclists who thrive on meticulously planned training regimens. Addressing the concerning issue, Joss narrated her insights, stating, “You have to completely relinquish that when you get pregnant because you can’t really control the days where you feel good.”

Joss also discussed how pregnant cyclists often grapple with the question of how much riding is safe and advisable. She suggested a solution, asking female cyclists to ride as much as they are actually comfortable with. Advising the amateur riders, Joss remarked that target distances must be set based on their health and capabilities. Lowden also emphasized the importance of staying vigilant about nutrition during this crucial time.

As breastfeeding and other motherly activities demand high energy, Joss urged other women cyclists to refrain from rushing into post-pregnancy diets. With her knowledge and experience, the brave rider was enlightened that the priority is always to sustain the growing lives of the babies. Lowden also acknowledged how she benefited from the guidance of her fellow cyclists, who joined the peloton as mothers. She particularly named her teammate, Elinor Barker, who had returned to racing after giving birth.
