A friend in need is a friend indeed. Just like the old saying, Greg Schraeder from Omaha made friends who were there when it mattered the most. Schraeder has been a cycling enthusiast for a long time and has embarked on numerous rides. However, one cannot predict what the future has in store. Likewise, Schraeder was unaware that June 20, 2023, might be the last time he would mount atop his favorite bicycle.?

While recalling the incident, Schraeder stated that the ride was part of an annual ride party for a social cause. As the team took on the challenge to hike up a rugged terrain, things seemed perfectly normal with vibrant laughter echoing in the tranquil backdrop. Much like an anticlimax, Greg Schraeder walked for a while and suddenly dropped to the ground…unconscious!?

As Schraeder lay unconscious, most of his teammates did not understand the gravity of the situation initially. One of his teammates, David Martens, stated that he thought Schraeder had slipped while attempting to sit on the chair. However, the entire team soon was concerned and knew something was off.?

As the sun beamed upon the team at a pleasant 92 degrees, the situation they were in was not so jovial. Soon, one of the members, Lisa Nelson jumped in to help. As she performed CPR on Schraeder, they could not find a pulse on the man. Now, under such a circumstance, the possibility of surviving for any individual would have been as good as zero. This is where the friendship came in. Schraeder was lucky enough to be surrounded by Dr. Phil Meyer, who was a retired pediatrician, a respiratory therapist in Nelson, equipped in CPR training Steve Mendlik, and finally, Martens, a law enforcement official.?

The group immediately took to work and started compressions and mouth-to-mouth. After Nelson was tired, Mendlik jumped in. They carried the CPR for about 12 to 13 minutes before the paramedics arrived. Schraeder was soon taken to the hospital and was attended to at once. Fortunately and quite miraculously, Schraeder recovered. His cardiologist credited his team members for their incredible job with the CPR saying, ?you pretty much had had the dream team.? ?

Indeed, miracles do happen and friendships go a long way. After getting a new lease of life, Schraeder was too happy for his teammates.?
